Scott proposed during the last hour of the last day of our summer vacation
to New York City. He'd been carrying the ring in his daypack all week,
waiting until we finally got around to visiting the Empire State Building.
After allotting just a couple of hours for it before we had to leave town,
we waited in line after endless line to get to the top. They even held
us hostage for a picture.
Finally, after an eternity of waiting, we stepped out of the last elevator onto the observation deck. By this point, we were running about half an hour behind schedule, but Karen had paid for that audioguide, and was going to use it, gosh darn it! So she stood at the edge and identified all the important buildings from the northeast corner... then the north side... then the northwest corner... and you get the idea. After working her way all the way around the building, she said to Scott, "Okay, I think we can go now. We'd better hurry, or we'll miss our plane!" And Scott answered, "Not just yet. I have to ask you something first."
She said yes. And we bought that stupid picture. :)
The first time we talked about ring specifics was at the Tiffany store on
5th Avenue. There, Karen pointed out stones that were too big, and ones
that were too small, and expressed her preferences for round cut diamonds
in simple silver-tone bands (platinum would be nice), and by the way,
her ring size was 3 3/4 just in case you were curious. She thought she
was passing on this information for some distant future use, having no
idea that a diamond ring of that exact description was sitting right in
Scott's backpack. Actually, one thing was different: Scott bought the
ring in size 4... which turned out to be correct. Nice job, Scott!
We went simple for our wedding bands too. Much nicer that way. :)
